The requirement of the normal rat for pteroylglutamic acid.

چکیده
Many workers on the subject of pteroylglutamic-acid (PGA) deficiency in the rat have obtained data about the requirement of the rat for this vitamin; but so far the emphasis has been on the therapeutic dose required to correct a given deficiency rather than on the amount necessary for maintenance. Figures for the normal requirement are needed as a guide in the preparation of certain purified diets for rats. They are also necessary in another connexion. Davidson & Girdwood (1948), Wilkinson (1948) and other clinical workers have reported that, when PGA is used in the treatment of pernicious anaemia, the dose has often to be increased progressively in order to maintain a constant level of haemoglobin. This is an unusual response to a vitamin, and it is therefore desirable to find whether any comparable effect can be seen during the maintenance of rats with pteroylglutamic acid. As a preliminary to the solution of this problem, the present paper describes the collection of some data on the normal requirement of the rat for this vitamin. In the course of the work we have necessarily made observations on the syndrome of pteroylglutamic-acid deficiency. This syndrome has been described by many workers, including Spicer, Daft, Sebrell & Ashburn (IWZ), Endicott, Daft & Ott (1945) and Asenjo (1948), but we wish to make further comments on the signs.

Antioxidant Activity of Eclipta alba L. in Normal Rat Liver
The present study investigates the antioxidant potential of the ethyl acetate fraction of the aerial parts Eclipta alba L. Hassk (EAEA) which was widely used as hepatoprotective plant. EAEA was orally administered at doses of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg for 7 days in male Charles Foster rats. The extent of hepatoprotective potential of E . alba was studied by assessing the biochemical para...
متن کاملCongenital cardiovascular anomalies induced by pteroylglutamic acid deficiency during gestation in the rat.
Congenital cardiovascular anomalies were observed in the offspring when rats were placed on a dietary regimen deficient in pteroylglutamic ("folic") acid during gestation. These cardiovascular malformations occurred only when the mothers were given this diet for specific periods, as short as two or three days, in early pregnancy, at a time when the heart and aortic: arches were in the initial s...

Objective(s): Populus species have various pharmacological properties, including antioxidant activity. In this study, the effects of Populus tomentiglandulosa extract (PTE) on histopathology and antioxidant enzymes in the rat liver and kidney were examined. Materials and Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to three groups; (1) no...

Background: Giberellic acid is a plant growth regulator, apentacyclicditerpene acid promoting growth and elongation of cells, and also a type of pesticide. In this study its oral administration effect on male rat hormones including gonadotropins (LH and FSH) and testosterone, and also lipid peroxidation product (Malondialdehyde) in testicular tissue was investigated. Materials and Methods: Twent...
